Building Blocks of the Energy Transition Whitepaper

Two Column Container

Critical Minerals and Materials in the Low-Carbon Transition

Working with key industry partners, we created a global program to deepen the debate over the future of energy, hosting high-level, expert-driven roundtables in London, Washington and Singapore on the theme, Building Blocks of the Energy Transition.

Each roundtable sought to shine light on key questions such as:

  • What essential minerals, metals and materials are needed to support the transition?
  • How fast can global supply scale up, and where are the most critical bottlenecks?
  • How might technology advances and policy action help resolve these challenges?

To achieve our goal of a richer, more relevant dialogue we brought together all sides – government, finance, industry, academia and civil society – for discussions we hosted in academic settings on three continents, to enable us to gather perspectives from around the world, as energy issues vary widely by region.

This 24-page whitepaper, presented at the 2023 Energy Intelligence Forum, is the result of that global dialogue. It clarifies where the key supply crunches are, and where evolving technologies – for example in EV batteries – can help sidestep them. It reveals that geopolitics, not just supply, present a major risk to meeting future demand. And it affirms the importance of polymers and composite materials to the low-carbon economy, but also notes limits around refining and recycling.
