Carbon Storage Licensing Monitor, October 2023 Update
With many firms now focused on CCS projects as part of their decarbonization strategies, some host governments are examining licensing opportunities for carbon storage sites. To date, only a handful of governments have made formal carbon storage awards through both direct applications and formal licensing rounds. Recent awards in the UK and Texas suggest emerging competitive strategies among the US and European majors, regional independents and select specialist firms, which will now be regularly tracked in the Carbon Storage Licensing Monitor.

ENERGY TRANSITION RESEARCH
Transition Strategy Index: Strategic Divergence Persists
The strategic divide between differing corporate responses to the energy transition is slow to narrow, even as firms across the industry spectrum roll out new low-carbon plans, targets and spending. The latest results of our Transition Strategy Index – expanded to cover 29 major oil and gas companies – show how companies are taking action to confront transition risks but remain far apart in their approaches. The Index analyses and assesses how companies are positioning for the energy transition – and which are most exposed to the challenges of accelerating global industry change. Attention is turning from formation of strategies to implementation efforts, with rising scrutiny of both European Majors’ bold transformational plans, and of other firms following more modest adaptation pathways. Companies’ financial resilience, eroded by Covid-19, is set to recover, and will help companies deliver on plans.

Emissions Monitor, April 2024 Update
The latest Emissions Monitor shows that some firms are doubling back on targets, like Shell, while others choose to double down. Several European and Asian NOC companies have published their 2023 sustainability reports, with benchmarking data now available in this update. Additional data will be added as remaining companies report data later this year. In terms of emissions performance, Western majors are outcompeting their NOC peers, demonstrating improvements in their operated emissions. Methane remains a core focus with the launch of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter, which includes specific targets for operated methane emissions from its signatories.
